#01 – The Universe, God’s creation or a pure accident?

Sneak Peak:

This website contains 23 articles, numbered from #1 to #23, and I recommend reading them in order, at least up to article #13. As an engineer from Batna, Algeria, I’ll use this first page to try to explain why the chance of the universe being the result of an accident is virtually close to none.

So, does God truly exist?

Before answering the question “Does God truly exist or the universe is just an accident?” a more important question to consider is: Do you believe you have a soul? Because if you don’t, you probably don’t believe God exist either. The soul is the invisible, essential part of who you are. While your body is the physical part of you, your soul is what gives you life and consciousness. Think of it like a computer: your body is the hardware, and your soul is the software. Without the software (the operating system), the hardware is useless, just a bunch of parts. Now, ask yourself: When you feel happy, when you fall in love, when you are sad or you feel guilty about something, do you believe it is your brain (the hardware: a piece of meat) that senses all these emotions? No, it is your soul! And it is your soul that will return to its Originator when you die. The Qur’an says: “Every soul shall taste death, and then to Us (the originator) you shall return” (29:57).

Having addressed the question of the soul, we can now ask: Does God (the Originator) truly exist, or is the universe a simple accident?

To answer these questions, let us compare the precision of a human invention, the clock, with the precision of the universe and it’s governance:

The question one must ask in order to determine the probability of it being accidental is:
If the components forming the clock were thrown in the air, would it be possible for them to fall down and land assembled with the precision required to keep the correct time? Everyone agrees it is impossible!

Now, let’s take a moment to take a look at the universe through a telescope and ask ourselves: Could the remarkable precision of the universe be purely accidental? Consider, for example, the events of February 27, 2010. On that day, a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile, and NASA geophysicist Richard Gross, along with other seismologists, estimated that the earthquake was so intense it shortened the Earth’s day by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second) and shifted the planet’s axis by about 4 inches.

The Earth orbits the Sun at a speed of 107,244 km/h and rotates on its axis every 24 hours at a speed of 1,674.38 km/h. Meanwhile, the universe itself continues to expand and the earth is travelling through space with our whole solar system at about 28.96812 km/second (18 miles per second). Yet, despite this vast cosmic activity, a single earthquake was enough to cause a measurable delay of 1.26 microseconds.

If we can all agree that the intricate mechanisms required to build a clock could not possibly be the result of a pure chance, how can anyone argue that the system governing the entire Universe with its extraordinary complexity and precision, from subatomic particles to black holes, from the flawless motion of planets to the remarkable fact that an earthquake recently altered the system by an astonishing 1.26 microseconds is the product of a simple accident? It is just inconceivable and just as we recognize that a clock requires an intelligent and very talented designer, so too does the Universe, which must have been designed and created by a far greater, more intelligent, and powerful force . That force is what we call God, the Almighty (Allah in Arabic).

Now that we established that the Universe can not be an accident, did God really send prophets as described in article: ” #02 – The prophets of God” to let us know of his existence and what is expected from us?

Below, I will briefly refer to article “#11 – What is the Qur’an” which relates to this page (article #1):

I’ll skip ahead a few pages to give you a preview of article #11 – What is the Qur’an. You can stop reading this page and go directly to article #2 – The Prophets of God, or continue reading to get an idea of what’s inside the Qur’an.
The Qur’an is considered the word of God, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel. It is the final testament and the most preserved book on Earth, remaining in its original form as it was 1,400 years ago, with not a single word or letter added to it (in it’s Arabic version). While reading the following, keep in mind that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was illiterate, he could neither read nor write, and spoke only one language, Arabic.
I will give you five examples of what it says in the Qur’an about the ‘Expansion of the Universe,’ ‘The Layers of the Atmospheres,’ ‘the iron,’ ‘The Orbits,’ and ‘The Concept of the Relativity of Time’.

  • Expansion of the Universe:

The expansion of the universe is one of modern science’s most startling discoveries, yet 1400 years ago, when there was no understanding of how the universe functioned it was revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) that the universe was constantly expanding.

“And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.” (Qur’an 51:47)

The word “heaven,” (Sama in Arabic) is in use in various verse of the Qur’an, and refers to either the universe or the sky above the earth. Here, the verse speaks of the universe expanding, which is the very conclusion science has reached today.

  • The Layers of the Atmosphere:

One of the facts about the universe revealed in the Qur’an is that the sky is made up of seven layers.

“It is He Who created everything on the earth for you and then directed His attention up to heaven and arranged it into seven regular heavens. He has knowledge of all things.(Qur’an, 2:29)

Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke. In two days He determined them as seven heavens and revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate. (Qur’an, 41:12)

Scientists have found that the sky surrounding the earth (atmosphere) consists of seven layers. The layers differ in physical properties such as pressure, types of gasses, etc… and each one of these layers has its own mandate (just as mentioned in Verse 41:12) or vital duties for the benefit of humankind and all other living things on earth .

From forming rain, to preventing harmful rays, to reflecting radio waves, or averting the harmful effects of meteors, each layer has a particular function.

  • 1- Troposphere
  • 2- Stratosphere
  • 3- Ozonosphere
  • 4- Mesosphere
  • 5- Thermosphere
  • 6- Ionosphere
  • 7- Exosphere

  • Iron:

One of the elements highlighted in the Qur’an is iron, which was sent down to earth from space.

“…And We sent down iron wherein is mighty power as well as many benefits for mankind…”(Qur’an, 57:25).

Professor Amstrong works at NASA where he is a well-known scientist. When he was asked how iron formed, he stated that scientists have only recently come to discover the relevant facts about the formation process and that the energy of the early solar system was not sufficient to produce elemental iron.

The iron found on Earth, as well as the iron found throughout the Solar System, comes from outer space, since the temperature of the Sun is inadequate for the formation of iron.

The energy required to form one atom of iron was found to be about four times as much as the energy of the entire solar system. The temperature at the surface of the Sun is 6,000 degrees, and the core temperature, meanwhile, is about 20 million degrees. Iron can only be produced in stars much larger than the Sun, where temperatures reach several hundred million degrees. When the amount of iron in a star exceeds a certain concentration, the star can no longer accommodate it and explode in what is called a “nova” or a “supernova.” These explosions allow dispersion of iron in the Universe.

Professor Armstrong concluded: “it is very difficult to imagine that this knowledge revealed in the Qur’an fourteen centuries ago could have come to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) from a human source”.

  • Orbits:

God revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) that the universe was full of orbits and paths.

“It is He Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They swim along, each in an orbit” (Qur’an 21:33)

“By the sky full of paths and orbits.” (Qur’an 51:7)

Muhammad (pbuh) did not know what a telescope was, or what orbits were, so where did he got his knowledge of astronomy, unless it was revealed to him by the creator of the Universe?

  • Concept of the Relativity of Time:

Today, the relativity of time is a proven scientific fact, revealed by Einstein’s theory of relativity in the early years of the 20th century. Until then, people were unaware that time was a relative concept which could change according to the environment. Yet the great scientist Albert Einstein proved it with his theory of relativity. He demonstrated that time is dependent on mass and velocity and that time can speeds up or slows down. In all of human history, no one had clearly expressed this before except the Qu’ran:

“And verily We created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six Days, and naught of weariness touched Us”. (Qur’an 50:38)

“A day in the sight of your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count.” (Quran 22:47)

The Arabic word for “day” is “Youm.” This word appears several times in the Quran, referring to a different measure of time depending on the description of the event (as explained by Einstein: time is not constant and varies). In one verse, the duration of a day is equivalent to 50,000 years (Quran 70:4), while in another verse, a day equals a thousand years: “A day, in the sight of your Lord, is like 1,000 years of what you count.” (Quran 22:47). Therefore, the Quran clearly shows that time differs depending on the event and is not constant, just as Einstein proved in the early 20th century.

Without the concept of the relativity of time explained in verses (70:4 and 22:47), it would be difficult to understand how the Universe could have been created in six of our days. The fact that no one knew time could change, until Einstein’s discovery in the 20th century, coupled with the fact that the Quran clearly explains that time is not constant, provides additional evidence that Muhammad (peace be upon him) could not have been the author of the Quran and could not have copied it, as the relativity of time is not found in any scriptures prior to the Quran.

So, once again, this is proof that the Qur’an cannot be the words of an illiterate man from the 7th century, but rather the words of the One who sent Muhammad (peace be upon him), as well as the other prophets before him (as described in the article (the Prophets of God), the Creator of the Universe Himself!

The only logical conclusions are:

1- The universe can not be an accident, so there is a God, and since none of the laws of the universe are duplicated or in conflict with each others, there can only be One designer, One God!

2- And since Muhammad could not be the author of the Qur’an, he could only be the messenger of God, therefore the “Shahada” (Islam testimony of faith below) is correct:
